Burgers in Beijing – #1 Slider Nation 🥇

A relative new comer in Beijing’s burger scene, Slider Nation has been going since 2020 but sure has landed with a huge splash! Coming 4th in the 2021 Beijinger Burger Cup, they knocked previous 2020 champion Side Street out of the competition in the final 16.

However, here at LTL we think that they are worth even more than 4th place and they get our personal number one spot for best burger in Beijing.

As you might guess from the name this burger place specialises in sliders. Each slider patty is 50g of mouth watering Australian wagyu beef that truly sets them apart from the competition. One serving contains 3 sliders and comes with a side of seasoned duck fat fries that are just bursting with flavour.

Founded by Henry, Slider Nation originated as a delivery only burger place where those “in the know” could order directly through a WeChat group. Since then it has just kept growing and now has a physical location in a food court just off Liangmaqiao River.

Along with the sliders and fries they have a selection of beers and other mixed drinks available. For gin fans, a must try is Henry’s homemade lemon and thyme infused gin.

Their sliders are also available to order through the major food delivery apps such as Meituan Waimai and JSS.

Fun fact slider in Chinese is 小汉堡 xiǎo hànbǎo which literally means “little burger”.

Burgers in Beijing – #2 3 Little Pigs 🥈

Tucked away in the hutongs is this hidden gem. Although, this has one of the smallest venues on the list and is a lot less well known than other burger places, this is in our opinion one of the best burgers in Beijing.

3 Little Pigs is run by Andy’s Craft Sausages who, as you might guess from the name, make and sell artisan sausages in Beijing.

They have a focus on good quality meat and produce, which let’s be honest, can sometimes be a little difficult to find in China.

Here you won’t find the extensive menu as offered by some of the other burger joints, but this just means they’ve been able to perfect the burgers they have.

A must try is their Bacon Cheeseburger, their house cured bacon is the real deal which, as I’m sure any Brit in Beijing can relate to, is a rare find!

All their burgers are served with homemade tater tots, which adds some real nostalgic value to the dish and is a nice change from your standard chips (or fries for those Americans reading).

Burgers in Beijing – #3 Slow Boat 🥉

Slow Boat actually took the crown in the Beijinger’s official Burger Cup in 2021, but on our list we are placing them at number three. Slow Boat have won the most Burger Cups out of any venue, managing to win the title five times since it was launched in 2011.

Once you’ve tried one of their burgers you’ll immediately see why they’ve won so many times!

This brewpub has plenty of different burgers on offer, with some really unique twists, like their Thai inspired Lao Thai Thai burger.

However, the must try burger has to be their award winning Fryburger which is a classic cheeseburger topped up with their homemade aioli sauce and fries.

For vegetarians they have an excellent crispy tofu burger, which they promise even tofu haters will love!

They also do some great side dishes, their seasoned fries or pickle spears are the perfect addition to their burgers.

Do be mindful that these are meant for sharing, one portion of fries will definitely be too much for one!

Burgers in Beijing – #4 Side Street

Coming in at number four we have winners of the 2020 Beijing Burger Cup: Side Street. First popping up in Beijing in 2018, they’ve now become a Beijing burger staple.

Side Street offer a great range of burgers and specialise in fusion food, with Indian flavours really spicing up their menu.

Some of their must try burgers are the KO, the Squatter (if you can get past the rather visual name) and their Southern Tikka.

Although not out number one burger on the list, Side Street do have the number one burger deal!

On Mondays burgers are buy one get one free if you buy an alcoholic drink.

Most of their burgers are around 50-70 CNY so two for that price is a real steal.

Now Side Street is number three on our list, but we do think they are number one for vegetarian burgers, so this is a must visit for any vegetarians out there.

They have three different vegetarian burgers on offer, which to be honest is pretty impressive! Our personal favourite is the Hutong Hipster which is just as tasty as any meat burgers on offer.

Burgers in Beijing – #5 Arrow Factory

Next up on our list is Arrow Factory which is an old LTL favourite, you might recognise them from our list of best brunches in Beijing.

This English style brewpub has seven different burgers on their menu, which includes two vegetarian/vegan burgers.

One of which is their famous Pulling-Me-Jack burger which uses jackfruit to create a meat free version of pulled pork.

A must try for any vegetarians out there looking for something a bit different.

For meat eaters we’d definitely recommend the El Ranch Hand which brings a Mexcian twist to the classic burger.

To wash down your burger you can choose one of Arrow Factory’s many tasty home brews.

Burgers in Beijing – #6 Great Leap

Great Leap is another brewpub on our list, you might begin to spot a pattern of where the best burgers can be found!

Unlike some of the other places on our list Great Leap burgers sticks to the basics when it comes to their burgers.

They only have a couple on their menu but they’re proper homemade classic burgers.

They have quite a few venues dotted around Beijing, though not all of them serve food so make sure to check that before going.

Our personal favourite Great Leap is the one located in Liangmaqiao – if you’re more of a pizza person they have some amazing pizzas on offer too.

Great Leap is probably best known for their beer, so be sure to grab a pint as the perfect accompaniment to one of their mouth-watering burgers.

Burgers in Beijing – #7 Q Mex

Winners of the Burger Cup in 2017 and winner of second place in 2021, Q Mex offer up a selection of classic burgers and also some Tex-Mex fusion burgers.

Although not in our top five, Q Mex have some really unique and tasty burgers.

Anyone who is a fan of a bit of Mexican spice will be sure to love this place.

A must try is their Spicy Double Chorizo Burger made with their homemade beef chorizo patties.

Q Mex have multiple venues around Beijing, although the menu can differ at their various locations so if you’re after a burger be sure to check the menu of where you’re going first.

Burgers in Beijing – #8 Home Plate BBQ

Home Plate BBQ used to dominate the burger scene in Beijing in the past, winning the Beijinger Burger Cup three times in a row from 2012 to 2014.

However, in the years since there have been lots of burger newcomers and Home Plate ended up placing 5th in the Burger Cup in 2019.

This is by no means due to the quality of their burgers slipping, but just due to more quality competition coming to the scene.

As you might have guessed from the name Home Plate specialises in good old American BBQ food.

So it really goes without saying that either their Pulled Pork or Chopped Brisket burgers should definitely be on your list to try.

Now, you might not think of vegetarian and BBQ in the same sentence, but we have it on good authority that their Veggie Burger made from black beans is one of the best in Beijing.

Burgers in Beijing – #9 Jing A

Yes, that’s right it’s another brewpub 😂!

Beijing really has its fair share of brewpubs and they all do pretty decent burgers, with Jing A being another one of them.

With the burgers at Jing A they’ve put quality over quantity, with only a few classic burgers on offer.

We’d recommend their Classic Cheeseburger which comes with a double patty, plenty of cheese and their special house sauce.

And of course they have a great selection of home brewed beer to choose from as the perfect accompaniment.

Burgers in Beijing – #10 Great Outdoors

With 14 different kinds of burgers on their menu, the Great Outdoors has the most options out of any of the venues on our list.

They also have some truly unique offerings that you won’t find anywhere else.

One such burger is their Chairman Mao Smoky Spicy Burger which comes with Hunan smoky bacon and Hunan chilli to put a Chinese twist on the classic bacon burger.

If you’re finding that there are too many choices and you can’t just pick one burger then that’s no problem.

You can choose their “Burger Bites” where you select any three of their burgers to have as mini sliders instead.

Although this is a blog for the best burgers in Beijing, we have to mention the amazing jianbings that the Great Outdoors also has on their menu.

Another great twist on a classic they have pizza, chicken or vegetarian jinabings on offer.

Burgers in Beijing – #11 The Local

Last in our top 10 is The Local, one of the most popular expat bars in Beijing.

Like some of the other places on our list they have a more limited burger selection, but there are some really great burgers on there.

Our recommendation is their Spicy Dry Rub Avocado Cheese Burger.

It is pretty spicy though, so if that isn’t your thing their Double Cheese Burger might be more up your street.

For anyone who is a fan of chorizo they also do an amazing pork chorizo burger topped off with some jalepenos.

Burgers in Beijing – #12 Blue Frog

Next up we have the very first winner of the Beijinger Burger Cup: Blue Frog which won all the way back in 2011.

It is also the last burger on our list to have won the much coveted crown.

There are a lot of different burgers on the Blue Frog menu, and when we say A LOT we mean it, they have a total of 13 burgers!

Any burger fans will love their Gourmet Beef Burger with multiple toppings served in a ciabatta.

Like Side Street, Blue Frog also do buy one get one free burgers on a Monday, though with a slightly steeper price of around 80-90 CNY per burger it’s not quite as good a deal.

They have numerous venues in Beijing with all serving burgers so you can take your pick.

If its summer we’d recommend heading to the China World Mall as they have a great balcony to enjoy spectacular views of the Beijing skyline.

Burgers in Beijing – #13 Shake Shack

The newest addition to the Beijing burger scene is the American burger chain Shake Shack.

They opened their first Beijing venue in Taikooli in Sanlitun in August 2020.

Shake Shack has already proven popular with local Beijingers who have regularly been queuing for hours for a taste of these famous burgers.

But are the burgers worth they hype?

The immediate popularity of Shake Shack is definitely more down to the name, rather than them having the best burgers.

Compared to Beijing’s other offerings Shake Shack’s burgers have more of a fast food feel, rather than a quality gourmet burger like the others on our list.

Of course burgers are only half the reason for going to Shake Shack so we have to talk about their shakes. They have three shakes/concretes (a super thick milkshake) that are unique to Beijing to wash your burger down with.

Our recommendation is the Hutong Hawthorn, inspired by candied hawthorn (糖葫芦 tánghúlu).
